My goal is to share my perspective. It is a passionate perspective—both visual and written.
My passion is borne of my Colombian heritage and my perspective is honed on an American upbringing. It is a cultural synthesis.
My creativity manifests itself through photography, writing, story telling and woodworking. This blog highlights the first three.
Images
My photography is the capture of a visual whisper—fleeting in time, space and light.
I photograph what stimulates me visually. It is my shorthand for stories or ideas that cannot be encompassed in a thousand words (a picture maybe worth a thousand words but a thousand words does not necessarily tell the whole story).
I am drawn to a variety of subjects but my common formats are landscapes (both natural and industrial), abstract and macro work, and patriotic themes. I am also drawn to photographing people but it is a subject that I pursue infrequently.
Though most of my work is still photography, I sometimes alter and manipulate and expand some photographs as they (individually) call me to a deeper expression. Sometimes these are simple Photoshop manipulations but just as frequently they form the basis of a larger story, whether resulting in a unique piece of art or a photo essay.
Ideas
Much like the fractions of moments that I capture through my photography, ideas—or pieces of ideas—lodge themselves deep within my soul and germinate.
Sometimes, like the cicada, these ideas lay subterraneously dormant for years before breaking through to the surface to resolve their evolutionary imperative.
I write topical essays and short stories about issues that trigger my passion. I am hugely drawn to current social issues that America struggles to understand and, if necessary, redefine. I write on these subjects to better define my own principles and add to the public discourse.
In my stories, I explore questions and dilemmas that intrigue me; that have no wrong answers and maybe, no conclusions.
And I am a fan of the long cadence in writing, the richness of a slow, unhurried and expansive expression. Much like many vast landscape images, the whole is often best captured through the intricate detail of the parts.
Tangents
Lastly, I embrace my ADD as an asset not a deficiency. It enriches me with the moment—also a fraction of time—and allows me to be present in the present.
Within those moments I discover weird and wonderful things—though sometimes they are dark—that embed themselves deep in my soul and germinate…
